mmm Dave Cooper/drawings

^not mine^
I found a really interesting site.

the great Dave Cooper (see above) shows a step-by-step of one of his paintings. Its interesting stuff. you should check it out. check it out. -ck it out. these echos are really terrible. I need some more people seeing this so that i'm not just talking to myself. :S (I know that was lame, but nobody is going to see it anyway so it doesn't matter)

and I don't know about anyone else but I like his pen and ink work/drawings/studies more than his paintings.

I suppose they are very different creatures, even though they are the same shapes.
the paintings instantly lose the crispness of line and the major black/white contrast.
but they gain softness and they turn into what I see as another illustration, nothing jumps out to me.

I think the drawings are fantastic. I love the way that objects gain texture just from the outline of whatever it is, for example the cauliflour-ness of the thighs and the kind of fluffy worn wood texture on the fence in this image.
the fade-out is nice too..

I guess what I really want to do is ask why people see paintings as being so much more valuable and finished than drawings? in this case I don't really see it as having gained anything except colour(and is that not something that you could get across in a drawing anyway?

well I suppose it is all just personal preferance in the end. theres no dominant power that says this is the right way to do it or that is the right way to do it. I just don't think people give it enough thought sometimes and take these constructs as something that has always, and will always be the same.

me included. I saw the step-by-step painting thing and it made me want to paint even though I like my drawings better than my paintings... strange that.

and heres some of my doodles (these aren't the drawings that I mentioned above).

why am I doing this?

just in case you were wondering, i'm doing this drawing course partly because of my love of animation.

but my other reason is that I just spent a semester teaching myself to draw badly for some of my work and then when I finished I got scared that I would not be able to draw well again unless I unlearn my unlearning fairly quickly.

some of the "bad" pictures had an interesting turnout.

more drawing lessons

I did some more stuff for the drawing lessons(these ones), redoing what I had done before but "looser" like Steve told me to.
*note to Steve*is this kinda what you were meaning? were you saying to concentrate on the underlying forms because they weren't there in the last pictures? and are there any examples out of what i've done so far that you can use to show me what you meant by the 'minor differences that make the difference between a lifeless drawing and one that pops off the page'? */note to Steve*

here we go again. :)

I will have some of my other work on here soon, honest.

na-nu na-nu

uh...
Well i'm Aaron.
Im not famous or anything and I don't really know many people but i'm trying to be an 'artist' and everybody tells you to get your work out into the public eye.
I enjoy drawing from life.

I also watch alot of cartoons, but only ever ones that I get out from the video shop or own( I have no tv ).

uhm. studying fine arts at massey university in New Zealand and I also enjoy running up and down stairs and watching the homeless people that live across the road.

I am fairly notorious for starting something and then not doing anything with it, so hopefully this doesn't take that same downward spiral.

I plan on posting any sketches and paintings and things I create on here. I think i'll also document the online animation course that i'm hoping to start
so there will be progress sketches and practice things on here too.

heres my grandads dog. and a very small bird.

thats all for now.
hopefully I'll post more soon.
